THE STORM! said in Doc Brown voice

welcome to Sundae Matinee, a sprinkling of sweet stuff

greetings!

Not much to say this week other than hello, bonjour, hola, hi!

Are you doing OK out there?

The world feels extremely heavy, and not in a good way like a weighted blankie feels. As I write to you, I am preparing to be covered in a gargantuan amount of snow and this only adds to that melancholy feeling I have felt all week. With each pending flake set to hit the ground, it is like a sadness crushing me. Don’t worry pals, this will pass - it is just a case of The Winter BluesTM.

Tommy and I with the Winter Blues.

I almost did not send a newsletter this week, but something told me that even if I had very little to report on, it is worth getting even the smallest of tidbits out into the universe. What better way to combat the sads than with a sprinkling of sweetness from your favorite Old Sport, Rosalie Kicks. Even when things are looking dark, there is always a light ahead, guiding me to better days.

what’s the latest scoop?

Valentine’s Day is almost here

As you read this, I am working on my annual Valentine snail mail.

I absolutely adore to send mail, and this year I am rather excited about the Valentines I picked up. Want to find a Valentine in your mailbox?

Drop me a line with your mailing address here.

Post Script: Tommy requested that I show you all his new meece, and inform you all that a NEW video is in the works. Are you ready?

this week i am proud of…

Two Things!

#1. Being asked to serve as the Social Media Correspondent for Nitrate Picture Show

I know, I know this is old news… I first reported here in November that I was asked to serve as the Social Media Correspondent for the 2026 Nitrate Film festival. Well, I am absolutely elated for this opportunity and most likely won’t stop gabbing about it for a while. As their Correspondent, I will be responsible for conducting interviews, going behind the scenes, and sharing my experiences. It is going to be fantastic, and I can’t wait to share this adventure and all the escapades with you.

Passes to Nitrate Picture Show are now on sale! Read the article I wrote this past week here in support of the festival and snag your pass now.

#2. The events we have been co-hosting movie screenings with Free Library of Philadelphia that I have been programming

Over the Summer, the Free Library of Philadelphia procured the entire back issue collection of MovieJawn (hey! thanks, Mom for donating your zines) and they are now on display at this beautiful institution for readers young and old to feast their eyes upon.

MovieJawn at Free Library of Philadelphia

This past September we began a partnership with the Literature department to host FREE! movie screenings each month at the Parkway Central Branch. This past week, we screened The Hudsucker Proxy in celebration of MovieJawn’s latest print zine featuring Cinematic Journalism.

The Hudsucker Proxy tells the tale of a naive man, Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins), who is used as a patsy by a gaggle of corporate executives. They place Norville in the role of President of their manufacturing company as part of a scheme to lower the stock price, so that they in turn can procure it. Ace report, Amy Archer (Jennifer Jason Leigh) sleuths out the scheme while working undercover as Norville’s secretary.

The Hudsucker Proxy was released in 1994, and I consider it to be one of the best modern day screwball comedies. It is very much in the vein of a motion picture one would have witnessed in the late 1930s and 40s. In fact, if you are familiar with the classic Hollywood film, 1940’s His Girl Friday, I believe it is easy to see many similarities between Hildy Johnson, who was portrayed by Rosalind Russell and Hudsucker’s Amy Archer. They are both fast talking, bright, newspaper reporters that find themselves in a male dominated space. For me, as a fellow journo and writer, they are both huge inspirations.

It absolutely thrilled me to introduce this film on Tuesday night to a crowd filled with many first-time watchers. I’ve always been a bit scared of public speaking, but something that fuels me through the fear is the act of being able to share movies I love with others. I may not be the best at giving intros, but with each opportunity I find it to be a tad bit easier. I already look forward to my next chance: February 17, in which I’ll introduce an early David Lean picture, 1949’s The Passionate Friends.

Journalism NOW more than ever, is so important - and there are so many great films that portray this. If you are looking for recommendations, I highly recommend picking up a copy of the latest MovieJawn here.

this week i recommend…

Procuring a Chef’s Hat

I am now a chef. As I mentioned in previous post here, I have developed a fondness for being in the kitchen. With my new found admiration of baking and cooking, it was only a matter of time until I started sporting a chef’s hat (naturally, of course). In the above photograph, the hat you see upon my noggin was dug out of the bottom of a closet yesterday… wardrobe remnants from when my best friend forever, Katie and I filmed our short, Pizzaman (available to watch here). I am now donning this cap when I make a bowl of cereal, procure my coffee in the morning, as well as cooking up a plate of spaghetti.

The lesson here folks is this: dress for the job you want. ALWAYS. It is important to accessorize as the little doodads build confidence. Which brings me to a jacket I recently obtained (thanks Ben for the recommendation, and for being my personal stylist)… however we are out of time for today, so more on that next week (MAYBE).

Thanks for stopping by.

Happy you are here. xx.
goodbye.
