Oh Where, Oh Where Can Rosalie Kicks Be?
welcome to Sundae Matinee, a sprinkling of sweet stuff

Greetings!
It has been seventy days since my last correspondence.
I never intended for that much time to go by since we last spoke, but life has been much like a tornado lately and I got swept up into its cyclone. Sadly this wild trip did not end with me landing in the Wonderful Land of Oz.
Week after week the act of writing my Sundae Matinee would be added to my task list and by the time Saturday evening arrived it would be left undone. This was due to other responsibilities taking more precedence. Unfortunately for me, it would be cause for much anxiety. When Saturday evening would roll around, I would fret that I allowed another week to go by without providing this weekly scoop of sweetness. The guilt started to plague me, despite my best efforts to not allow myself to unravel.
Earlier this week several pals reached out and told me how much they missed my ramblings here. I was told that this newsletter became part of their weekly morning routine and they sorely missed it. Well. Knowing this certainly did put some pep in my step and provided me with the motivation to pick up the pen. My hope is that I did not cause you concern for my status. Things have been going quite well for me, despite my occasional case of the blues. Like most, January has been rather difficult and I keep striving to find the silver lining in things. The sprinkles of good stuff. It is difficult and I can only imagine things will get tougher. Which brings me to this. A promise not only to YOU but MYSELF: that I will try my absolute darnedest to keep the lights on here at Sundae Matinee.
I often have numerous experiments being conducted in my laboratory simultaneously. Once an assignment or a project is complete, I hurry on to to the next, barely stopping to take a breath or to celebrate what I have accomplished. This is where I feel Sundae Matinee can come in handy… it can by my place to share my wins with you, mourn the losses and overall provide a moment for me to stop and take a breath. Acknowledge some of the sweetness.

I have been traversing the land far and wide spreading the good word of the movie publication, MovieJawn.
In my travels I have been meeting so many radical film folk, visiting cinematic palaces and watching a slew of motion pictures. It thrills me to be part of the growing film community here in Philadelphia. Given the current state of affairs, I believe that now more than ever it is important to find those that bring comfort, make you feel safe and serve as a reminder that not everything in this world is vile.
One of the most rewarding partnerships has been teaming up with horror aficionado and all around super rad human being, Christina Acevedo.

Christina is the founder of the inclusive club, Girls Like Horror. Much in the vein of an after school club, this is a place to shine the light on the fact that women do indeed love horror flicks! Another goal is to spotlight the amazing work that females are doing within the genre itself. After or before a film screening, the club members mix and mingle to dish on the latest horror news or what they just witnessed on the silver screen. All genders are welcome! The only requirement is that you have a passion or curiosity for horror through the eyes of girls.
MovieJawn has been tag teaming with the club on several events with great success. I am very much looking forward to the event we have planned for Valentine’s Day! Christina has not only been inspiring to me, but has also been extremely patient and supportive of my wild schemes. For those that arrive early to the screening of Possession on the 14th, they will have the opportunity to make their own Valentine to their favorite final girl! Yes, it is certain that I am my mother’s daughter. I truly think this will be a lot of fun - details and ticket info here.

Christina exudes confidence and it has been rubbing off on me a bit. She has made me realize that I not only am worthy of being at the table but I that I bring with me a wealth of knowledge, creativity and awesomeness to share with this world.
Remember my list of dreams of schemes?
Well. MovieJawn is well on the way to growing and I now believe I am ready to work on another item from this list. Which will be? Well. You’ll have to tune in next week to find out. Guesses are welcome.

This week I am proud of… several things that I wrote in the past few weeks.
My interview with Mark Nelson of Mahoning Drive-In about the upcoming roadshows, read it here
My interview with Karina Longworth about her new podcast season… she is a major inspiration for my podcast, Cinematic Crypt, read the interview here
My review of one of my favorite movies from 2024 - Nickel Boys, read it here

This week I recommend checking out… Ed Emberly’s Drawing Book of Weirdos

I love to send mail. Nothing quite provides a thrill like slapping a stamp on an exquisitely curated and decorated envelope. With my most recent correspondences, I have started to include drawings of monsters and creepies with the help of Ed Emberley. It is such a delight to send my creations off to faraway lands. I truly hope pals of mine have been enjoying finding a monster in their mailbox. I have been trying to write letters more. I find it is such a soothing activity and also a great way to get offline for a bit. Anyways, if you would like to find a creature in your postal box shoot me your snail mail address here and I’ll be sure to send one of my ghoulies your way.
Welcome Back. Happy you are here. xx. goodbye.
Tell a friend.
