Movies are magic

welcome to Sundae Matinee, a sprinkling of sweet stuff

greetings!

Yesterday I had a tremendous day.

Here are some highlights:

-Seeing Barry Lyndon for the first time and presented in the best way possible with my partner in crime by my side on the silver screen. After viewing, it is without a doubt that this motion picture will become an obsession of mine. More on this in a future Sundae Matinee.

-This idea floated by me and I managed to catch it: Cinematic Pipe Club. Take, for example, this pipe featured in Barry Lyndon. Not only is it decadent, but it’s exquisite, and deserves to be pointed out. Thanks to my new pal Selena, the club members will also have pointers, formally known as Cinematic Pipe & Pointers Club. The pointers will be absolutely perfect to point out important features in motion pictures that we are fond of. We will meet in Selena’s divine den with tea and delectable pastries. Inquire within to join us.

NOW BACK TO THE SHOW: In effort to live a more analog life, I have started a media journal to record my favorite watches and reads from the month. Below is photographic evidence documenting February.

In February I watched 79 movies (mostly made possibly by that wascally wabbit and Turner Classic Movies)

Given the short month and other priorities I only managed to read only one book in February. I mentioned The Brightest Star in my last newsletter. Author Gail Tsukiyama pens a historical fiction tale about actor Anna May Wong and her experience as a Chinese American finding her way in Tinseltown. Overall I enjoyed this book and am pleased as punch that it led me to dig more into Anna May Wong’s filmography. I am now presently reading, Not Your China Doll by Katie Gee Salisbury.

Do you eat ice cream in winter? I DO.

what’s the latest scoop?

Let’s Meet at the Cinema!

This very moment is the calm before the storm! Soon I will be hitting the road, traversing this great land in pursuit to watch more movies. Here are a smattering of FUTURE events that I am most looking forward to.

MARCH

This Tuesday, MovieJawn will present Black Narcissus in partnership with the Free Library in celebration of the Spring 2026 print issue featuring CINEMATIC NUNS.

I will be introducing this motion picture and can’t wait to expose a bunch of people to Sister Ruth. My hope is that compels people to watch more Powell & Pressburger flicks. Snag your FREE ticket here

In a couple weeks you can find me with my partner in crime at the annual Sci-Phi Film Festival slinging zines at Hiway Theater.

I am really excited about the line-up this year, especially the screening of the Back To The Future trilogy. I will of corpse be busting out my George McFly costume again. Snag your tickets and passes here

APRIL

In April there is much to look forward!

The annual 35mm Film Festival at Ambler Theater is April 17-19 and the line-up is incredible! I most look forward to watching The Clock, Merrily We Go to Hell, and Daisies (which I will be watching for the first time). Female Trouble will be such a thrill watching with a crowd and especially with one of my favorite film pals, Liz Locke of CinemaSips.com.

Alicia Malone, Turner Classic Movie Host

The icing on the cake is that Turner Classic Movie host Alicia Malone will be in town. This event will be absolutely fantastic! Grab tickets here.

Just Added!

I am so excited about the MovieJawn collaboration with Free Library and Joan Crawford’s grandson Casey LaLonde. On Saturday, April 25th Free Library of Philadelphia and MovieJawn present Nicholas Ray's 1954 western classic, Johnny Guitar with special guest, Joan Crawford's grandson, Casey LaLonde.

This FREE event takes place at Parkway Central Branch Library beginning at noon with a meet and greet with Casey and MovieJawn staff. At 1pm, join us in the Montgomery Auditorium for a special presentation of Johnny Guitar with an introduction from Casey and a Q&A to follow moderated by me! Casey will also be sharing a rare collection of Joan Crawford's home movies, compliments of the Crawford estate. Snag your free ticket here

Isn’t Freezo precious?

this week i am proud of…

MovieJawn’s Spring 2026 Print Zine

Isn’t she a beaut?

Praise Cinema! Within the pages of the Spring 2026 MovieJawn, staff shares motion pictures that celebrate Cinematic Nuns.

Each and every time I pick up the latest zine from our printer Fireball, I can’t contain my excitement. With each issue I feel my layout and design skills improve. It also makes me feel pretty damn good to see such a variety of voices represented, spouting off about my favorite thing: Movies. The joy of holding a copy of our magazine in my grip is incredible.

The Spring issue theme may seem an unlikely pick for us here at MovieJawn, which is one of the reasons that I am most excited about it. From drama to comedy to nunsploitation, this genre of film is ripe for exploration. I love tackling topics that I know little to next to nothing about, as I always come out on the other side grateful for the newfound knowledge. Religion was never part of my life growing up. My first interaction with the Holy Bible was not until taking a required course as a freshman in college. There is not much I took away from this piece of literature other than it being an elaborate fairy tale. I did, however, become quite fascinated with the concept of living one’s life as a nun. I am particularly thrilled with how my article turned out this time around.

After watching a slew of Nun films, I arrived at the conclusion that it is not easy to be a nun. Nuns deserve to have fun too, which got the little man that lives inside my brain to start churning the gears. I have a fondness for Disney, specifically vintage Mickey Mouse. Benjamin tells me that Mickey is just a suit filled with rats tangled up in a rat-king and, as horrifying as this image is, I still love the little guy. What better place to take a gaggle of Nuns to unwind than at the most magical place on earth? Help them find their inner child. After much contemplation, I selected four nuns that I would love to spend the day at Disneyland with and the themed land that I feel best suits their personality. Fun Fact! the background design of my article is paper that I scanned in that was remains from a Mickey Pretzel that I purchased when I visited Disney World.

Find a copy of the Spring 2026 print zine in your mailbox by purchasing it here.

I would like this to be my home. More abodes should be shaped like things.

this week i recommend…

The Cactus Blossoms

I had been pining for a CD player for the lab and Benjamin recently rescued one that was about to hit the trashcan at his work.

I first discovered THE CACTUS BLOSSOMS from episode 03 of Twin Peaks: The Return when they were shown performing their song “Mississippi” at the Roadhouse. It has been a while since I have listened to this album, but it has been on heavy rotation these days. I was fortunate enough to see them a few years back and hope they roll through town again soon.

Check them out here, if you are a fan of old timey music like Roy Orbison or new timey old sounding music like Orville Peck and Kacey Musgraves.

Thanks for stopping by.

Happy you are here. xx.
goodbye.
