Late Night Sundae

welcome to Sundae Matinee, a sprinkling of sweet stuff

Good Evening.

Welcome to Sundae Matinee late night edition. It is difficult for me to fathom that, as of tomorrow, I will be placing a nail in the coffin that is September. This month has marked the busiest, most exciting time for me in my life and I can’t recall a moment in which everything has flown by so fast. In the past twenty nine days I have taken a trip to Canada for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), followed up by a journey to Austin, Texas for Fantastic Fest and lastly partook in an all day movie marathon known as Terrorthon 2 in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania at the Hiway Theater. Between the two festivals and Terrothon 2, I have watched fifty-nine movies this month. I believe it is safe to say that I have now transformed into a piece of celluloid. I now feel the cool autumn breeze gliding through my perfs.

Things have been absolutely wild with no signs of slowing down and, for the first time in a long time, I am incredibly happy. I am excited about what the future holds. MovieJawn has never had more momentum than it does right now. My hope is to continue making strides. Every little step counts.

This week I have been filled with a lot of emotions and feelings about where I am at at this specific moment. Given the hour I am working on this post (I typically write these on Fridays) I am going to keep this brief. Know this… next week I will be back with a proper edition of Sundae Matinee which will include my fantasitical trip to Austin, a tribute to my wonderful friends Liz and Chris Locke, the new friends I met along the way and a sprinkling of spooky stuff to officially kick off my favorite season.

In the meantime, stay tuned to MovieJawn.com as I will be unveiling a ton of dispatches from the fests I have attended and my annual Halloween Radio Special on the Cinematic Crypt. Stay tuned and don’t forget to use Zonweiss teeth cream nightly to ensure proper health to your fangs.

On Thursday, I am finally going to be reuninted with my best friend forever, Katie. It has been way too long since we have seen one another. I have been trying to show those I love more affection by partaking in hugs and well… she is going to receive a bear hug.

Katie so happens to be my stylist (as well as my writing/direting partner, watch our award winning short film Pizzaman here) and since embarking on the Grand Fantastical Escape she has been experimenting with various colors to my hair. Thus far I have gone blue, green and now I would like to experiement with pink. This idea came to me after viewing the wonderful film Mad Monster Party yesterday at Terrorthon 2.

Please see exhibit A and take note of the color, NOT the style:

I look forward to catching up with Katie on Thursday and will share the results of our pinky experiement after a visit to her hair coloring laboratory.

This week I am proud of… the motion picture review I wrote for Apartment 7A - the prequel to Rosemary’s Baby. Check it out here on MovieJawn. I was fortunate enough to catch it on the silver screen at Fantastic Fest and was bummed when I learned that it would not receive a theatrical release. However, I believe even tuning in via streaming, the devil will still manage to razzle dazzle his way into your heart.

Tune in next week to find my interview with the writing team. In the meantime, watch Apartment 7A now on Paramount+ or purchase a copy digitally.

This week I recommend checking out… two films My Old Ass and The Substance.

Flick Pick #1: My Old Ass

When an eighteen year old woman has an opportunity to speak with her thirty-nine year old self, she finds that she may have some contemplation to do but also that she may be a lot wiser than she thinks. The trailer did not sell me on this one but I did not allow that to keep me from watching it. I was fortunate enough to attend an early screening and found that I really enjoyed the thoughtfulness of the story and the incredible performances from Maisey Stella and Aubrey Plaza. The director Megan Park managed to put a unique spin on story that has been told before. I was hoping to do a full review of this one but just ran out of time. Find where to watch here.

Flick Pick #2: The Substance

My recommendation is to go in blind on this one. Know this though… you will be in for a WILD ride. This film took risks, and I believe that the majority of them paid off. Demi Moore gives a tremendous performance that will be hard to top. After you watch the film check out my pal Tori’s great review over at MovieJawn here. Find showtimes here.

Happy you are here. xx. goodbye.

Tell a friend.
