Greetings from Rome...

welcome to Sundae Matinee, a sprinkling of sweet stuff

greetings!

from Rome…

This weekend I have been on location at Capitolfest in Rome, New York. Each year it is a celebration of silent and early talkie cinema. In other words, heaven on earth!

ZaSu Pitts

This year they are spotlighting two actors from Hollywood’s past, ZaSu Pitts and Laura La Plante, by showing various motion pictures from their filmography. This whole trip has been an absolute blast with my partner in crime, Benjamin and our movie pal, Sergio, aka MovieJawn’s official press photographer. We have been slingin’ MovieJawn zines, cinematic goodies, and making new fans along the way.

Laura La Plante

The fun does not stop here… on Friday Benjamin and I will be packing up the car once more to head to Canton, Ohio for the Monster Bash Ghost Film Festival.

Over the course of two days we will witness eight! haunting and frightful films featuring specters! I am looking forward to checking out Palace Theatre and meeting some new goblins and ghouls. MovieJawn will be on location in the upstairs balcony for the entire weekend, come say hi!

what’s the latest scoop?

Dare to step into the shadows…

This Wednesday my podcast Cinematic Crypt returns with a brand new episode featuring an examination of The Thin Man.

Episode 043 kicks off my latest series featuring Cinematic Cats & Dramatic Dogs in celebration of the Summer 2025 print issue of MovieJawn. I am absolutely thrilled to be back in my dank Crypt once more, digging up graves and spending time with my favorite Hollywood corpses. Catch my latest episode this Wednesday in which I uncover the canine corpse of Skippy, best known for his portrayal of Asta in The Thin Man (1934). Available for download on MovieJawn here or wherever you snag fine motion picture podcasts.

this week i am proud of…

spending time under the stars

Catch up on all my writing here at MovieJawn.com

As mentioned last week, TCM Summer Under The Stars is one of my favorite times of year. With the second week underway, I have already managed to watch so many gems. What thrills me most is the prospect of being introduced to a potential new, favorite, classic Tinseltown star. Right now vying for that spot is Glenda Farrell. Make sure to check back in the upcoming weeks to see how everything shakes out. In the meantime, check out my picks for week two here.

This week I recommend…

Checking out the book, I, Toto.

Sometimes the internet can truly gift you some amazing things. In conducting research for episode 044 of Cinematic Crypt, I came across the autobiography of Terry aka Toto of Wizard of Oz (1939) fame, on Internet Archive here. This treasure of a book is a firsthand account of the canine star herself, and is one fascinating read. Check it out in preparation for my next episode.

Thanks for stopping by.

Happy you are here. xx.
